A Melbourne man drowned after a boating mishap at Lake Eildon yesterday.

The man and his companion were thrown into the water when a ski-boat capsized near Bonnie Doon about 10.30am, police said.

The man's companion was pulled from the water by people on a nearby boat. Water police from Benalla were called out and several private boats joined the search.

The man's body was located by police divers about 7pm in an area known as Brankeet Arm, not far from where the boat had capsized.

The dead man, 35, was from Melbourne's eastern suburbs.

Ambulance officers treated a nine-year-old girl and a 74-year-old man after separate near-drownings yesterday. Both were found floating face-down in the water; the girl at the Pines Swim Centre in Frankston North and the man at Shire Hall beach near Mornington.

Both were taken to hospital, with the man reported to be in a critical condition last night. The girl's condition was stable. -- ANDRA JACKSON
