New Millennium

The Age

Saturday January 1, 2000

Most Victorians stood still for a few moments to mark the new millennium, but others saw the night as a chance to move - literally. Thousands gyrated in the bush beyond Lake Eildon at a week-long dance party. Others found a less frenetic way to move through the night, gliding down the Murray River in houseboats. And it wasn't just the Murray that was flowing. There was plenty of beer and cheer. But even these once-a-year sailors could not escape the long arm of the law: police patrols breath-tested them as they steered their way into the new century.
