FIGTREE mountain bike rider Amiel Cavalier won the national downhill MTB championships at Eildon, Victoria, at the weekend.

Cavalier, who last year won the Illawarra Academy of Sport cyclist-of-the-year award, recorded the fastest time of 2min54min77sec to win by half a second from Tylah Breeze and Ezra Bartholdt.

Cavalier represented Australia at last year's world junior championships in Switzerland and still has another two years in the junior under 19 category.

He recently attended a national camp under the direction of national downhill coach Scott Sharples who sees Cavalier as a medal chance at this year's world junior championships.

Southern Highlands' Niki Gudex placed third in the elite women's 2004 national cross-country MTB titles on Saturday, losing to world junior champion Lisa Mathison and defending champion Anna Baylis.

Gudex was pleased with her performance, as was her coach Michel Vermande, considering some recent injuries.

Gudex will head overseas to race the World Cup Series in her quest to represent Australia at the Athens Olympics.
