Liquid Attractions

It's been a long time since the shoreline has been anywhere near The Lakeside Hotel in Jamieson. With Lake Eildon's crowd-drawing reserves so depleted, the owners of the pub have concentrated on creating their own liquid-based tourist attraction. Now called the Jamieson Brewery, the pub is producing some rather interesting and unconventional beer.

Take, for example, the prize-winning Jamieson Mountain Ale - a wheat beer that has the dark, burnt, chocolate flavours of stout without the residual sweetness. The Jamieson Brown Ale is a traditional British ale but with Australian lager characters. Idiosyncratic, quirky and deceptively drinkable is the Jamieson Raspberry Ale. Unlike traditional European fruit beers, this is neither sweet nor strong. Raspberries are added during the fermentation of a pale ale for just long enough to add colour, acid, a little tannin and, most importantly, flavour. The result is a light pinkish beer with a medium bead, strong aroma of raspberries, malty mid-palate and long, clean, crisp finish. Good with dessert or as a top-and-tail for an evening beer tasting.

Jamieson Brewery, Eildon Road, Jamieson, phone 5777 0515. Beers about $3/330ml.
